Brain Foods?

For our brains to work at their best they need energy, electrical energy to be precise. This energy is made from the carbohydrate in the food that we eat.

But there's more to brain-food than just 'fuel'. It would seem that the brain is one of the chief beneficiaries of a diet containing the omega-3 fatty acids. They help produce the outer membrane of brain cells and as new brain cells are being produced when we learn new things, the body needs the raw materials with which to make them. Either eat fish regularly or take a good quality omega-3 supplement. It makes sense.

The brain also needs the raw materials to build neurotransmitters - the chemicals that make the brain do all the amazing things that it does. One of the ingredients of these chemicals is 'choline' and is found in eggs, amongst other foods. Studies have shown that increasing choline levels can improve memory and improve reaction times. It can also help to minimize fatigue... so it's eggs for breakfast on exam day, perhaps.

There are plenty of other 'must-haves' for good brain function: Vitamin B (in all its forms) is known to be good for the brain. Sugar can give you a boost, but not a very long-lasting one. Carbohydrates take time to convert into glucose so can give a more gradual release of energy. Seafood, meat, eggs and dairy produce all contain valuable proteins for the manufacture of neurotransmitters. If you are a vegan, check with a nutritionist that you are getting everything you should.

It's a 'no-brainer' to list the things that are bad for the brain: Alcohol (and other drugs) Nicotine, foods high in additives. As with many things in life - garbage in = garbage out.

Another unsung hero of brain foods is fibre. If you are spending ages sitting down studying, do everything you can to avoid becoming constipated! Beans and brans will keep things moving. Plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables and lots of fresh water to keep you hydrated.
